The Hitch

He was badly wrong about his war in Iraq but it was the honest seduction of military technology that lead him there – they gave him a helmet and let him ride shotgun with soldiers in helicopters and fantastic war machines across the desert banging out Snoop Dogg on the sound system – and few men can resist that. Particularly men who don’t earn a crust through physical work or risk their lives too often.  Which is most men.

I am a great fan regardless.  We need more educated drunks in the media. More contrarians who can write something like this of Ronald Reagan:

The fox, as has been pointed out by more than one philosopher, knows many small things, whereas the hedgehog knows one big thing. Ronald Reagan was neither a fox nor a hedgehog. He was as dumb as a stump. He could have had anyone in the world to dinner, any night of the week, but took most of his meals on a White House TV tray. He had no friends, only cronies. His children didn’t like him all that much…. Year in and year out in Washington, I could not believe that such a man had even been a poor governor of California in a bad year, let alone that such a smart country would put up with such an obvious phony and loon.

I see now he has made his choice of candidate in the US election.  It might seem unexpected, given his identity has stagnated on the rock of Iraq, but he has a radar for fakery, better put: a bullshit detector, and it goes pinging madly when he turns it towards McCain.

His excellent website.
